Entrance hall and entryway design: big order in a small space

35–40 cm depth is enough for a shoe cabinet and 60 cm for coat hanging. How to create a tidy entryway with a bench, mirror and ventilated shoe storage, even in narrow entrances.

Entrance hall and entryway design: big order in a small space

A good entryway doesn’t need a large hall. 35–40 cm of depth is enough for shoes and 60 cm for coats. A full-wall, floor-to-ceiling cabinet and a 45 cm-high bench can turn even a narrow entrance into the tidiest corner of the home.

The entrance hall is a home’s first impression, yet often the least considered space. If shoes pile up by the door and coats on chairs, the problem is the plan, not the space.

Why should a shoe cabinet be ventilated?

A closed shoe cabinet traps moisture and odours. Leaving slim ventilation gaps under the doors or in the top and letting air circulate between shelves solves the problem. Angled shoe shelves hold more pairs and let you see your shoes at a glance.

The space between the door and the stairs is the first dimension that sets the depth of the entryway unit.

Ideas for narrow entrances

  • Floor-to-ceiling cabinets: the top sections hold seasonal items, suitcases and umbrellas.
  • An open niche: an open compartment for everyday bags and keys saves you opening and closing doors.
  • Full-length mirror: integrated into a cabinet door it takes no space and makes the room look twice as big.
  • Light: a motion-sensor warm white (2700–3000K) LED strip means no more fumbling for the switch when you come home at night.

You can find examples in different sizes and materials in our entryway collection.

Frequently asked questions

What material should entryway unit doors be made of?

Since they are opened and closed often, choose durable surfaces: lacquer, wood veneer or fabric-covered panels. Concealed handles instead of knobs prevent knocks in tight spaces.

Is a seating bench needed in the entryway?

It is especially useful in homes with children or older people. The space under the bench can hold shoes or baskets, so no room is wasted.

How many days does an entryway unit take?

Once measurements are taken and the design is approved, manufacturing and installation time depends on the material. We give you a clear schedule during the site visit.
