Dimensions for an island kitchen: how many square metres do you need?

Square metres alone are not enough for an island kitchen; you need at least 100 cm of clearance around the island. Practical dimensions for island depth, seating overhang, stool and lighting heights.

Dimensions for an island kitchen: how many square metres do you need?

To fit an island, the kitchen must be at least 360–380 cm wide from one side to the other: 60 cm of counter, 100 cm of clearance, a 90–100 cm island and another 100 cm of clearance. Below that, an island cramps the kitchen rather than easing it; in such kitchens a peninsula (a counter attached to the wall) usually works better.

Island kitchens are a very common request, but if the plan isn’t right on paper you can end up with doors clashing and no room for two people to pass. The dimensions below are the values we use as a starting point in our projects.

Clearance: the most critical dimension

  • In a kitchen with one cook: at least 100 cm between island and counter.
  • If two people cook together: 110–120 cm.
  • If the dishwasher or oven door faces the island: leave close to 120 cm so you can stand in front of the open door.

The island’s own dimensions

MeasurementRecommended value
Countertop height90 cm (88–95 cm depending on the user’s height)
Island depth (cabinets)60–65 cm
Seating-side overhang25–30 cm
Seating width per person60 cm
Bar stool seat height65 cm
Between pendant and countertop75–85 cm
Four-stool island with pendant lighting above
With elbow room between the stools, four people sit comfortably at the island.

Should the hob and sink be on the island?

Putting the sink on the island lets you face the living room while you work. If the hob is on the island, the hood hangs from the ceiling and you need at least 30 cm of free counter behind it; otherwise people on the seating side get splashed. In open kitchens we usually put the sink on the island and the hob against the wall.

Adding storage to the island

Putting 60 cm-deep drawers on the working side of the island and 30 cm-deep cupboards on the seating side is a practical way to use the space from both sides. 80–90 cm is the ideal width for pan drawers. See built examples in our kitchen collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can an island fit in a small kitchen?

If the kitchen is narrower than 360 cm, a peninsula or a mobile work table on castors is more practical than an island, so you don’t sacrifice clearance.

What is the minimum length of an island?

180 cm is a good starting point for a practical work surface. If a sink and seating are planned together, 240 cm or more is comfortable.

How many lamps should hang over the island?

On islands 180–240 cm long, two or three pendants look balanced. The lamps can be spaced about 70–80 cm apart.
